Well today it becomes law that we must wear safety vests in all hub locations when we are out of our truck. Not a bad idea really. But why is it that it is only the drivers and not all pedestrians walking through the yard. And also why is it that we have been given these crappy orange cheap vests and not the lime green ANSI vests that all of the shunts have, that all the linehaul drivers in Montreal have, and most of the safety managers. I can't believe that the cost savings of a couple of dollars a vest is worth it.
The ANSI vests are proven to be more visible in all weather conditions. They are easier to wear. they have a zippered front and they have pockets if needed. The airports have switched to them, police departments have switched to them yet we go with the cheap orange construction vests to save a couple of dollars. Why has the company not set a standard issue vest? When all other employee's have the ANSI vests why is it ok for us to receive the ones we did. I know for a fact that we could have bought the ANSI vests for $13.49 U.S. but I am not sure about Canadian pricing. While I realize that we are in tight economic times I do not see the logic in saving a couple of dollars a vest (if there was even any savings at all). The green ANSI vests should be made a company standard. Can you really put a price on safety?

So what do you all think is the better vest? I am lucky enough to have one of the lime green ones, thank god. But I think I would rather pull out my own money and buy the lime green one myself than to be stuck with the orange one. I don't even think the orange one will stand up that well compared to the green one.
