Well today it becomes law that we must wear safety vests in all hub locations when we are out of our truck. Not a bad idea really. But why is it that it is only the drivers and not all pedestrians walking through the yard. And also why is it that we have been given these crappy orange cheap vests and not the lime green ANSI vests that all of the shunts have, that all the linehaul drivers in Montreal have, and most of the safety managers. I can't believe that the cost savings of a couple of dollars a vest is worth it.

The ANSI vests are proven to be more visible in all weather conditions. They are easier to wear. they have a zippered front and they have pockets if needed. The airports have switched to them, police departments have switched to them yet we go with the cheap orange construction vests to save a couple of dollars. Why has the company not set a standard issue vest? When all other employee's have the ANSI vests why is it ok for us to receive the ones we did. I know for a fact that we could have bought the ANSI vests for $13.49 U.S. but I am not sure about Canadian pricing. While I realize that we are in tight economic times I do not see the logic in saving a couple of dollars a vest (if there was even any savings at all). The green ANSI vests should be made a company standard. Can you really put a price on safety?

So what do you all think is the better vest? I am lucky enough to have one of the lime green ones, thank god. But I think I would rather pull out my own money and buy the lime green one myself than to be stuck with the orange one. I don't even think the orange one will stand up that well compared to the green one.

THIS only opens the door for more DISCIPLINE. THINK ABOUT IT. This does not make us any safer in our line of work. maybe some better lighting would be the way to go. There is not enough lighting there to even see you in a vest. And its discriminating when only some and not all people walking in the yard have to wear them.

You do have a point there, what about the brokers coming into the yards, the mechanics, the LPP's, the couriers at Metro West, the sorters and office workers walking the VERY dark path into both hubs that crosses our main driveway into the yard. All pedestrians should be required to wear them. I think it is a great idea to have them, I am questioning the vests themselves.

But you neglected to mention your opinions on the vests themselves.

IT is a hazard waiting to happen. and it has happend they should not be worn in our line of work. I have no problem with putting bigger wider and better reflection tape on our uniforms. I think safety is a good thing but I don't want to look like a safety poster boy. And putting it on and off all day long is a big pain in the ass. And wearing it all day long is not going to happen for me.

TRAFFIC SAFETY VESTS. Should not be worn around any machinery or equiment at any time. because it can become in tangled and catch on things causing serious harm to the person wearing it. CSA. / CANADIAN STANDARDS ASSOCIATION.

All right Leady, here's my take.....WTF? This orange thing becomes an armpit wedgy within 5 minutes of putting it on and everytime I take my coat off it falls on the ground. I know they are trying to be cost-effective but there is a reason the shunts went to the green, full smock-type,- the hub management wanted the shunts to wear them and they wouldn't wear the orange ones. A green one on the body beats an orange one under the seat for visibility hands down everytime. Period.
Now of course we have reflective tape or piping on our outergarments, and we are more concious of large equipment moving around us, but they are trying to beat a future lawsuit or fine from WSIB. I think we should staple our orange vests to the first yard pedestrian wearing the oh-so-fashionable black coat, black pants and matching black shoes and hat. There's where your vests need to be!!
DISCLAIMER- I am of course joking and would, in no way, suggest, participate in or condone the stapling of safety vests to hapless pedestrians, their children or their family pets.
Seriously, I'm all for safety. They have identified a deficiency in the yard and are taking steps to correct it but..... we are the ones least likely to be hit, as we are cognizant of the environment and the dangers involved. Not bulletproof, but less likely to be hit than an office or warehouse worker.
Every driver has or will have a story of almost taking a pedestrian who, of course, had the right-of-way. The r-o-w is not established until you recognize the existence of a human body in the path of travel. I HAD THE RIGHT-OF-WAY is not a fitting dedication for a headstone.
There, that feels better............

One thing I forgot to address, I think the voting will be influenced by the pictures posted.
The cool guy in the white t shirt and green vest is more easily accepted than the rigid guy(?) with his head cut off wearing the orange vest and and his blue shirt buttoned to the throat. If you had used one of The Fonz in the orange vest this might have been a closer race.

LOL....I'm still trying to figure out the polyester uniforms with the caps that won't fit an 8 year old child.

Yep....hot in the summer cold in the winter and polyester chaffs my nipples. Polyester is cheaper than a good cotton blend. Ever try to buy a polyester suit in a decent menswear store? There is a reason they are near impossible to find!

My theory is that the person that decided on polyester was wearing one of those caps and it must have cut off the circulation.

And you are concerned over green or orange vests?

LOL....just yankin' chains!

LOL well the polyester is a topic all on its own. And with the vest's Dawg it's a matter of comfort, wearability and visibility. Kinda like orange polyester and green linen.

If you have noticed school bus drivers have adopted the use of safety vests, they are all really noticeable and give you a place to look when you are allowing a bus to turn and watch as that bright green lime arm waves a thanks. If you remember their was an accident with a over zealous blue bin dump truck backing up and killing a worker behind him, if a vest had been worn maybe he would have been alive today.

Like you, I prefer the green vests, but I'd accept a soaking down in day-glo orange paint applied with a wire brush by a two dollar whore with AIDS if they'd give it to me. It'd beat what I have to work with now.

Best regards,
LMFAO Cheese.....kinda sounds like some kinky drunk as a skunk Saturday night fun! On a serious note, good post and valid point.

Hello Leadfoot;

I'm curious as to your statement I've quoted above. This has been a requirement of the Canada Occupational Health and Safety Regulations for years.
I meant a new company law for us.
